Missing Maui

I am a little bummed out today because I just realized I'm not in Maui anymore. I'm back to the daily grind of making meals, wiping butts, and doing laundry. We had the best time on our trip. It was so good to get away. I was nervous about leaving the kids, but it turns out they don't really need me after all! They both did great with their grandparents. We could barely get Jack to talk to us when we called home...he was too busy having fun. Now that we are all back to reality, Jack has been a little stinker...I think he has realized that his real life is not as fun as the life he had last week with his grandmas and grandpas and cousins. Here is a run down of our week on the island:

{Sunday}
Flew 6 hours to Maui. Got rental car and checked into our condo in Kehei. Went to the grocery store to stock our fridge with the necessities...water, diet pepsi, and dr pepper. Adrienne and Tyler weren't getting there til 10:30 that night, so me and Randy sat on the beach and read books. Then we found our favorite restaurant for the week...Fred's Mexican Food. We sat on the deck at the restaurant eating chips and guacamole and diet coke. Heaven. We were super tired with the time change, so we went back to the condo and took a nap. Then we headed to the airport to pick up Ad and Ty. They had just traveled like 12 hours on 3 different flights to get there...so they were a bit tired. We all just went to the room and crashed.
{Monday}
Randy got up early and walked down the the beach to watch the sunrise. I slept through it. I wish I could say that I was up for sunrise on the beach with him just once during the week, but if you know me, you know that didn't happen. The beach was a 3 minute walk from our condo. We spent most of Monday on the beach. Later that afternoon we went to Costco to get stuff for the week. The place we stayed at had bbqs and picnic tables that you could use, so we bought steaks to bbq that night. Randy and Tyler made us steak and stuffed mushrooms for dinner. Then we went back up to the condo and played texas hold em. {Tuesday}
Randy up for sunrise again, me not so much. Tylers brother told him there was this awesome snorkeling place called the fish bowl that we should go to. Sounded good to us. The thing is you have to hike 25 minutes to get there. No big deal we thought. We all put on tennis shoes, grabbed our snorkel gear and got directions to where the trail head was. Good old Benjamin at the snorkel shop told us the start of the trail was marked with some white paint. Easy enough, right? Wrong. We started to follow what we thought was a "trail" (side note: me and Adrienne never actually thought this was the trail, and kept asking the boys "are you sure this is a trail"...they assured us it was). Flash forward 2 hours, and we are lost walking around huge lava fields. If you have never walked on lava, don't. It is super sharp...which explains why we all had cuts all over our legs. At one point I looked over at Adrienne, saw the blood running down her leg, and just wanted to sit down and cry. Needless to say, we gave up on the fish bowl and headed back in the direction we came. Then we ran into the real "trail". Ok the real trail was a clear path marked with little gray stones...an easy walk. The trail we took was not a clear path and consisted of sharp jagged lava rocks that you had to climb over and around. When we got back to the street, we saw that the real trail started like 20 feet further up the road from where we started. We felt really stupid, and decided to blame it on either Tylers brother or Benjamin from the snorkel shop for not giving us better directions. But really we were the dumb ones. We decided more chips and guacamole at Fred's would make the day better...we were right. That night the place we were staying had a bbq by the pool so we ate hotdogs and hamburgers and just hung out down by the pool. This was also the night of the "hot bean"...long story...but it was basically just our boys eating beans from the salsa we bought, and then both of them regretting it. {Wednesday}
We got talked into listening to a time share presentation (again this one was Benjamin's fault) so Wednesday morning we spent at a resort in Lahaina listening to a lady trying to convince us that even though we are paying on two different mortgages right now and don't have any extra money, we should for sure buy a time share. It was a no go. We spent a couple hours after walking around Lahaina and had lunch there. We also saw the Banyon tree. It's basically a giant tree with a million different branches, but it's pretty cool. Then we went back to the condo, hit the pool for a bit, and then went to a Luau for dinner. It was really fun. We watched them pull the pig out of the ground...and then we ate it for dinner. Tyler was convinced that the pig they pulled out was plastic, and they just use the same one every night for their show...either way the food was pretty tasty. I think we played some more texas hold em this night when we got back to the condo. {Thursday}
Went to Big Beach...we heard it was a good one. It was really pretty. The south swell had come in, so the water was really rough. We were having a good time just laying out. We sent the boys up to the road to the taco shop to get us some lunch, and when they came back they told us they had talked to a guy that lost his buddy snorkeling. He said he hadn't seen him in a half hour. We didn't think much about it, until we saw the rescue swimmers, helicopters, and a search party on wave runners. It took them about 45 minutes, but they found the guy. They brought him up onto the beach and tried to revive him, but he was already too far gone. It was really hard to watch. Then like 20 minutes later, a grandma and her six year old grandaughter were sitting too close to the water, and a wave came in and pulled them both out into the water. We heard someone yell "get the kid, grab her" and about 8 guys went running, including Ty and Randy. Someone pulled both the grandma and little girl out, but it could have been bad news for both of them if people weren't there to help. I am already a little scared of the ocean, so none of this sat well with me. All me and Adrienne wanted to do was leave the beach and call home to talk to our kids. It was really hard for me to see the little girl in trouble, cause you automatically think of something happening to your own kids. So...needless to say it was a weird day, but we decided it wasn't going to ruin our night. It was Adrienne and Tylers 9th wedding anniversary, so we made reservations at a restaurant on the beach and had a really good celebration dinner! {Friday}
We decided we were going to give snorkeling at the Fish Bowl another shot...except for this time we would take the right trail! It was really fun. It was just this little cove that was protected by rocks with tons of fish in it. There was a tiny beach with black sand that we layed on...and we FRIED! We almost made it the whole week without getting burned. Adrienne's was so bad she was starting to blister! We nursed our sunburns with Dr Pepper and chips and guac at Fred's again on the way back to the condo. Adrienne stayed up in the room hiding from the sun, and the rest of us hung out at the pool for a little bit.
Sadly our trip was coming to an end...so me and Randy packed, and Ty and Ad took us to the airport (they were staying another couple of days). It was a good week with great friends and a lot of memories made. Thanks Adrienne and Tyler...love you guys!
